21 May 2019 – Dennistoun Thistle 4 – 3 Strathaven Dynamo– Milton – KO 7pm
Last night we decided to take our first run out on grass! Now, depending on who you speak to this is either a good or a bad thing and it was clear that everyone in the squad had their own opinion. However next season it’s likely there will be an abundance of matches to be played on grass, so it was decided that it was time for the team to start learning!
It goes without saying that we had a full squad – despite having a couple of last minute call offs we had other people desperate to take their place! It was probably one of Dennistoun’s strongest starting 11’s to date with a reasonably strong bench to match.
After losing so heavily in the last game Dennistoun wanted to prove they had the resillience and the skill to bounce back. This game was a bit of an unknown though, as Strathaven Dynamo are also a new team just starting out, so hard to know what level of opposition the team would face.
The game started off brightly for Dennistoun and we took a 2-0 lead, however it was obvious early on that this game wasn’t going to be a one sided affair with Strathaven also having lots of the ball and a few really good chances.
The game was a physical one with individual battles going on all over the park making it a very competitive game despite the “friendly” tag line.
Strathaven got back into the game and got it back to a level 2-2, before Dennistoun scored again making it 3-2 at half time.
After a 5 goal first half a competitive second half was expected and sure enough Strathaven drew level. Both teams were then fighting to try and get the win and it was end to end stuff.
The subs really made the difference at this point giving us some options to change things up and use fresh legs to help keep the momentum going, and it worked! Dennistoun got their 4th of the night and were able to hold on to their lead to win the match.
It was far from the prettiest football that Thistle have ever played and there were times in the game were the ball was up in the air more than it was on the ground, however the determination that the squad showed to press on and get the win was incredible and showed that the ability is there to win ugly when required.
Full time score: Dennistoun Thistle 4 – 3 Strathaven Dynamo.
