Saturday 24 August 2019 – Croftfoot 1 – 4 Dennistoun Thistle – Toryglen – KO 10am
After months of friendlies and preparation the day finally came for our first competitive match! To say everyone was excited was an understatement, but there were definitely some nerves in there too. A full squad of 18 showed up ready to play in our debut competitive match and even those that are known for being late were there on time to be fully prepared.
The location was Toryglen as our first game was away from home and when we arrived we were informed that the game was on the indoor pitch. This was slightly unexpected and the indoor pitch has the same dimensions as its neighbour Hampden across the road, so when the lads heard this they knew there was going to be a little bit more running involved than usual!
The SECL does not go straight into its league fixtures like some other leagues, but instead starts with a cup competition that consists of group stages. Today’s game was our first in the Athol Cup Division 2 Group stages. We are in Div 2 group A and our group consists of 6 teams from our division of the league including today’s opposition Croftfoot, Chalmers, Tollcross, Woodhill and Mount Kirk. The two teams that finish top in the group will go through to the semi finals against the top two of Div 2 group B. This means that it was all to play for as starting strongly would put us in a good position for progressing.
The warm ups and team talks were done and it was time to get down to business. Thistle started strongly having most of the initial possesion and on 7 minutes Lucas slotted the first goal into the back of the net. A second came from Aldo just 3 minutes later putting us in a comfortable position.
Another goal from Aldo on 23 minutes and we were 3-0 up and dominating the game, however the momentum slowed on the way to half time and the scoreline going in at half time was 3-0.
In the second half although still very much in control we somewhat took our foot off the gas and another goal didn’t come until 57 minutes. Another from Aldo, giving him his hat trick for the day.
The lead use as many subs as allowed and see out the game comfortably.
At 86 minutes a little bit of a lapse in concentration and we let in a cheap goal, but it wasn’t long before the ref blew the whistle for full time and we could celebrate our first competitive victory.
Definitely still some work to do in terms of play, but a very positive start indeed. Training on Tuesday and then our first home game next Saturday!
