Saturday 31 August 2019 – Dennistoun Thistle 4 – 3 Mount Kirk – Whitehill – KO 10am
Today was the day we got to play our first game at our home pitch. As announced recently the club managed to secure Whitehill High School pitch, right in the heart of Dennistoun for our home games and training ground, which means we get to play local to the majority of our players and sponsors.
This was the first time the team were playing here, so there were some new surroundings to get used to, such as the school changing rooms, bringing back fond (or not so fond!) memories to some of the lads in the team who used to go to school there.
Today’s opposition were Mount Kirk, an established team in the Churches league and we knew we could look forward to a competitive game. The lads were keen to go out and build on last week by getting another win under their belts and yet again we had a strong squad available and up for the game.
This match was definitely a game of two halves. We started strongly and at 12 mins in Tidser opened the scoring for us, at 21 mins Josh got us a second and then at 25 mins our continued pressure on Mount Kirks goal caused an error from them and an OG made it 3-0. Half time came and 3-0 was the scoreline and it looked like we’d be able to control and see out the game.
However in the second half Mount Kirk came out fighting and through a mix of disorganisation, lack of communication and our heads going down a bit we somehow found ourselves back in a game with Mount Kirk piling on the pressure.
Mount Kirk scored first in the second half making the score 3-1.
An incident with their goalkeeper and our striker resulted in them going down to 10 men, however this didn’t affect their ability to press on us and we really had to work hard to hold onto our lead.
A goal from Lucas took the scoreline to 4-1 at 72 mins, but Mount Kirk kept going and made the scoreline 4-2 and then 4-3.
The last 5/10 mins were nervy, but we got through and collected all three points, taking us to 6/6 in the Athol group stages so far.
A second win for us in the Athol Cup group stages but we certainly didn’t make it easier for ourselves. Lots to improve on before our next game, but we’re already looking forward to going up against fellow new side in the league Tollcross next Saturday.
