Saturday 14 September 2019 – Dennistoun Thistle 9 – 1 Chalmers – Whitehill – KO 10am
Game four was top vs bottom in the Athol cup group stages with us welcoming Chalmers to our home pitch for today’s match. Chalmers are an established side in the SECL and although results to date made it impossible for them to qualify from the group we knew that they would still be coming to give us a good game and they did just that.
A slow start from us let Chalmers in and they took the lead within the first 5 minutes. This forced us to dig deep and come back from being a goal down. It took us about 5 mins to gain our composure before Aldo opened the scoring for us with his first goal of the day coming at 11 mins.
At 1-1 Chalmers were still making the game tricky and Denny were still trying to find our rhythm in the game, but a second goal from Josh at 17 minutes allowed us to take a breath and try and settle. The first half continued to be a bit niggly and at half time the score was 2-1 to us.
A change at half time that saw Josh move up front gave us the lift that we needed and the second half couldn’t have been any more different to the first, the goals just kept on coming, with us scoring 7 in total in the second half.
Josh scored 2 more first at 54 and 57 minutes getting his hat trick before making way for Alex who bagged his first competitive goal for the club at 73 minutes. A goal for Dec at 75 mins and a second goal for Aldo at 78 mins meant that the game was clearly won, but the team, knowing that goal difference could be a factor in qualification kept going and a goal from John at 86 mins and a second goal from Alex at 88 minutes gave a scoreline that no one could argue was deserved.
Today’s win takes us to 10 points in the group. Depending on other results this could have been enough to see us through, but due to the way that other results in the group went it meant that it stayed tight and the teams to qualify won’t be determined until the final game next weekend.
Dennistoun Thistle Currently sit top of the group both in terms of points and goal difference. Based on the current group standings a point will be enough to see us through to the semi-finals. We’re expecting a tough game from Woodhill next weekend, but with the incentive of a semi-final to reach we’re looking forward to the challenge!
