Saturday 21 September 2019 – Woodhill 1 – 8 Dennistoun Thistle – Loretto Playing Fields– KO 10am
Game five of the Athol cup group stages was an important one. Just one point would see us through to the semi finals, with a win guaranteeing that we would top the group, so it was all to play for and the lads were certainly up for it. The opposition was Woodhill, an established side in the league and they were also looking forward to the game on what had turned out to be perfect conditions for Saturday morning football.
The game kicked off and Dennistoun started strongly pushing towards the Woodhill goal, but could not quite get a shot away. A little bit of fretting on our side allowed Woodhill the opportunity to get back up the field a couple of times, but came to nothing with our defence and keeper ensuring we were solid at the back. The scoring opened on 16 mins when Charlie was able to take aim at goal through a significant number of people in the box and get it past the keeper.
After that the game was one way traffic and it looked unlikely that there would be any other result than a Dennistoun win. Lucas scored his first of the game on 19 mins and at 29 mins a straight red for a challenge inside the box saw Woodhill go down to 10 men and Aldo calmly slot in our 3rd of the day from the penalty spot. One more goal from Lucas on 40 mins and the scoreline going in at half time was 4-0 to Dennistoun.
The team were determined to put in a convincing performance to win the group and earn their place in the semi-finals, so there was no let up in the second half. Lucas got his hat trick on 53 minutes and at 59 mins substitute Boab scored his first of the match.
However it wasn’t all plain sailing, some poor communication on our part saw some sloppy spells of play and Woodhill capitalised in particular when a wayward pass at the back allowed them to slip through on goal and get a shot away, once again denying us the clean sheet that we were hoping for.
The game was won long before that goal though, and before the final whistle both Aldo and Boab scored their second of the match taking our total goal count for the morning to 8.
Today’s win sees us finish top of the group, unbeaten and on 13 points and therefore we go through to the semi-finals of the Athol Cup. The semi finals will be played over 2 legs in December and we wait to find out who our opposition will be. It goes without saying that we are all delighted with this start to our competitive campaign, and hope it continues!
