Saturday 9 November 2019 – Dennistoun Thistle 3 – 2 St Francis – Whitehill – KO 10am

We were back at our home ground today for our next game in the league against St Francis, a team who just re-joined the churched league this season and were unbeaten so far in their league campaign. With St Francis in first place and Dennistoun in second this was a game that we knew would be tough, but would also be a good challenge for the lads.

The first half didn’t go our way, although fairly evenly matched on the ball we weren’t creating enough chances and St Francis took theirs well meaning by half time we were 2-0.

At this point it would have been easy to let the heads go down, but it was clear that we were still in the game, so a positive team talk at half time about being a bit more clinical in front of goal and to keep pushing sent the team back out for the second half with even more determination – and it worked!

Lucas opened the scoring for us and then Aldo got a second, bringing the score back to 2-2. With about 10 mins to go now it was all to play for and the game was end to end stuff (exciting for a neutral I’m sure, but not so much if you’re either of the teams involved!) Some excellent saves were made by both keepers to keep the score level.

Then at 90 mins Dennistoun were awarded a free kick not far outside the box. Penny was tasked with going up to swing it into the box and to everyone’s surprise and delight he scored! An absolute cracker of a goal that sent the team into a pretty big celebration!

However the game wasn’t over yet, there were still a couple of minutes of extra time left to play and they might have been the most nervy few minutes that we’ve encountered so far… not helped when St Francis were then awarded a free kick in a not too dissimilar position down the other end of the park. The ball was played in and on target, but it was in safe hands with Reidy in goal and he got it back up the park before the final whistle was blown.

To say the team was delighted was an understatement! You sometimes hear people complaining when teams “celebrate too much” but shouldn’t every win be celebrated?!

Credit to the whole team for not letting the heads go down today and pushing on for the win – brilliant team performance.

We’re pretty sure that the spectators who turned up in the cold enjoyed it too and look forward to similar competitive games against St Francis in the future – it really could have gone either way!
