Saturday 21 December 2019 – Dennistoun Thistle 4 – Trinity AFC – Alex Ferguson Park, Harmony Row – KO 10am
Dennistoun Win 6-3 over both legs!
Today was the final game of the year for the team and it was a big one. A win saw us progress to the Athol Cup Final, which in our first season as a team would be a huge achievement, and a pretty good way to end the year.
After last week we were aware of the challenge ahead, but after a good training session on Tuesday everyone was prepared and ready to get down to business.
Dennistoun started strongly and had shot after shot on goal, with none of them quite making it in the goal thanks to some excellent goalkeeping and a few poor final balls on our part.
Thistle then opened the scoring through Boab on the 26 mins. The goal an important one in terms of taking us back level on goals over the course of the tie.
If the score remained this way then the result would be penalties at the end of the match, and it was clear neither team wanted that and with 60 mins still to play both teams were pushing to get the win. Another goal from Thistle on 42 mins and a very speedy third from Josh on 44 mins meant that at half time Dennistoun were going in 3-0 up in this leg and +2 in terms of the overall tie.
The message at half time – simply keep doing what we’re doing and make sure we secure the tie. Having seen complacency set in before this was the one day in particular that you don’t want that to happen.
The second half saw plenty more chances and although Trinity were getting some chances Thistle looked pretty comfortable and starting to believe that the final was all but theirs.
A fourth goal for Thistle on the 70th minute to make it 4-0 pretty much guaranteed that was the case. The final 20 mins saw a number of chances from both sides, but nothing clear cut.
The final whistle went to cheers from Dennistoun Thistle and the few supporters they had there that day – our place in the final was confirmed!
Credit to all the lads for a brilliant team performance and their determination to come back from being behind in the first leg and all credit to Trinity too who over the 2 ties played some really competitive football.
Our opposition for the final won’t be decided until the 11 January, as the second leg of the other semi-final isn’t being played until then. Dates will also be confirmed once both teams are confirmed.
Full time score: Dennistoun Thistle 4 – 0 Trinity AFC (6-3) over both legs. Dennistoun Progress to the Final.
